A Project with a Purpose

Project with a Purpose

This class study on value from twenty years ago found a home….. “out of the blue.”

I sold a twenty-year-old oil painting today. It was a monochrome blue rendition of apples on a plate; an exercise on values that I had in my oil painting class at Brookhaven College a few years after I had started painting. I didn’t necessarily think about selling it. But I have been through a decades-long break in painting and hadn’t been thinking about selling anything, let alone even thinking about the pieces I had stored in my attic.

The piece isn’t anything spectacular. But the young lady that bought it texted me that the loved it and it was beautiful.

It’s gratifying to know that something you made has value even if the value it had for you at some point has long been expired. It reminds me of the sentiment of “everything is beautiful in it’s own way” and there is a season for everything under heaven.

There is a time to laugh, a time to mourn, a time to be alone, a time to be together, a time to be still, a time to move, a time to paint and a time to not paint, and a time to value monochrome blue apples.

Takeaway: don’t underestimate the small things. Be patient. At just the right time, the piece will fit.
